Simone de Beauvoir on the day she received the “Prix Goncourt” for her book Les Mandarins. Paris, rue de la Bûcherie, December 6, 1954. The photographer Gisèle Freund - who portrayed Simone at that moment and many other times from the 1930s to the 1960s - noted that Simone seldom smiled. “Not smiling was probably her way of protecting herself from others”, said Gisèle in her book Photographer, published in 1985.
