Simone de Beauvoir on the day she received the “Prix Goncourt” for her book Les Mandarins. Paris, rue de la Bûcherie, December 6, 1954. The photographer Gisèle Freund - who portrayed Simone at that moment and many other times from the 1930s to the 1960s - noted that Simone seldom smiled. “Not smiling was probably her  way of protecting herself from others”, said Gisèle in her book Photographer, published in 1985. The plaster hands in the picture are models of Sartre’s hands.   (Photo for auction here)
